Taylor Swift Finally Drops Her New Single
Taylor Swift has unveiled her fiery new single Look What You Made Me Do, in which she declares the “old Taylor is dead” while seemingly taking aim at the likes of Kanye West and Katy Perry.
The 27-year-old US pop star dropped the song – the first from her forthcoming new album Reputation – after teasing fans in recent days with cryptic snake videos on her recently blacked-out social media pages.
The build-up to the track’s release had fans excited, and they were delighted when the electro-pop song was finally released online, along with a lyric video containing cartoon images of snakes.
In the song – which uses an interpolation from Right Said Fred’s 1991 hit I’m Too Sexy – Taylor Swift sings lyrics such as: “The world moves on / Another day another drama, drama / But not for me, Not for me / All I think about is karma.”
She also uses a phone effect to say: “The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? ‘Cause she’s dead.”
Many fans believe the song is a revenge track aimed at the likes of Swift’s foes West and Perry, and West’s wife Kim Kardashian West.
Some suggested the song’s opening lines – “I don’t like your little games / Don’t like your tilted stage” – were a reference to West’s recent tour, which included a floating stage.
One fan wrote: “Kanye West, welcome to your tape #LookWhatYouMadeMeDo.”
Using crying laughing emojis, another added: “When Taylor said, “I don’t like your tilted stage.” She literally talked about Kanye.”
“Don’t like your tilted stage” KANYE IS OVERRR #LookWhatYouMadeMeDo,” another said.
Others were elated at the powerful song, while some were unimpressed with her apparent rebrand.
“Taylor Swift is coming for blood, and she won’t settle for less,” one fan wrote.
Another said: “#LookWhatYouMadeMeDo is a grower. At first listen, I was like it’s alright. Now having played it nonstop for the past 2 hours, I love it.”
“The old me is also dead!! Thank you @taylorswift13 it’s amazing! #LookWhatYouMadeMeDo,” one Swift fan enthused.
However, one less impressed person wrote: “Real Talk I don’t like #LookWhatYouMadeMeDo lol. I feel like she’s trying too hard rebrand herself and it feels awkkkk and weird.”
Another added that her “edgy rebrand” is “brinking on satire”.
Last year, West and Swift were involved in a fresh row over the rapper’s song Famous, in which he used the lyrics: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous.”
Taylor Swift denied approving the line, saying it “never happened”, before Kardashian West shared videos on Snapchat of West speaking to Swift on the phone, in which she appeared to agree to being used in the song.
She later retaliated with a statement that said she had not heard the song when she spoke to West, and that she would “very much like to be excluded from this narrative”, referencing West’s takeover of her MTV Video Music Awards acceptance speech back in 2009.
Taylor Swift has also had a long-standing feud with Perry, started over a row about backing dancers.
Perry recently said she wants to “let it go”, but her latest single Swish Swish is believed to be a diss track aimed at Swift.
Swift’s album Reputation is released in November and is the follow-up to her 2014 record 1989, and her sixth album overall.
