Kelly Rowland – Her Son Helped Inspire Her Change In Musical Direction
Kelly Rowland‘s new musical direction “popped into place” when she became a mother.
The 36-year-old singer welcomed son Titan into the world in 2014, and is now gearing up to release her first album since entering the world of parenthood. Speaking to Britain’s Radio 1 about the inspiration for her as-yet-untitled record, her first since 2013’s Talk A Good Game, Kelly Rowland explained that her baby boy made everything in her life – professionally and personally – “pop into place”.
“Right after I had my son I didn’t know what I wanted to talk about. I just found this place and found a groove and everything started to pop into place,” she smiled. “I remember, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m not in my 20s but I’m not in my 50s.’ I’m in this really glorious time in life where I feel like I’m receiving a lot of information and I feel like I have to give that back out, too. Just from years of being here on Earth, being a woman, and just going through life. That’s more than enough to talk about.
“That’s the space that I’m in right now. My theme is the extraordinary simple life of me. It doesn’t take a lot for me to be a happy girl. I like simple things. I like extraordinary things too, so I had to put that in there. It’s just a really colorful and beautiful record so far. I’m very excited.”
Among the people former Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland has collaborated with on the new record is Syd – aka U.S. singer and songwriter Sydney Bennett – frontwoman for Grammy award-nominated band The Internet. The 25-year-old also released solo album Fin to critical acclaim in February. Explaining her reasons for teaming up with the Los Angeles native Kelly said: “Syd’s voice just sucks you in. Everything about her is just so effortless. I love working with her in the studio. I think I played that song Girl at least a thousand times. It makes me feel sexy, feminine, and easy.”
