Amber Riley And John Boyega Up For West End Theatre Award
Amber Riley and John Boyega have been nominated for their theater performances at The Stage Debut Awards.
The former Glee actress has been shortlisted for the Joe Allen Best West End Debut award, which celebrates an actor who made their West End debut during the past year, for her portrayal of Effie White in stage musical Dreamgirls.
She will compete against Star Wars actor John, for his leading performance in dark drama Woyzeck, Audra McDonald, for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, and Imogen Poots for her supporting turn as Honey in an adaptation of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?.
The shortlist is completed by Andy Karl, for his leading role in the stage musical version of Groundhog Day, Anthony Boyle for his portrayal of Draco Malfoy’s son Scorpius in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Charlie Stemp for Half a Sixpence, and Andrew Polec for Meat Loaf jukebox musical Bat Out of Hell.
Amber has already won the Laurence Olivier and Whatsonstage.com awards for Best Actress in a Musical for her role while Anthony won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role earlier this year. Audra won her record-breaking sixth Tony Award for the musical for its Broadway run back in 2014.
Mark Shenton, The Stage’s associate editor said in a statement: “This is also the only category that will be put to the public vote, but whoever they chose will be a worthy winner.”
The inaugural The Stage Debut Awards will take place in central London on 17 September 2017.
