Steven Yeun – His Son Was Conceived While Filming Okja
Actor Steven Yeun has fond memories of shooting his new movie Okja on location in South Korea, because it’s where his baby boy was conceived. The former The Walking Dead star takes on a leading role in director Bong Joon-ho’s drama, about a young Korean girl who embarks on an international fight to save her titular super pig from being kidnapped and abused by the owners of a multinational corporation.
Production on the project last year took Steven back to his place of birth, and the stay was memorable for a variety of reasons – not least because it’s where his then-fiancee, photographer Joana Pak, fell pregnant.
“That whole trip was real gnarly for me. My kid was conceived there!,” he exclaimed to Vulture.com.
Steven reveals a scheduling mix-up allowed him to take a day off to meet Joana in Seoul after she flew in to visit him.
“We were shooting in Gwangju, which is five hours south (of Seoul),” he explained. “While we were there, my scenes got cut to a different day, so I was like, ‘Cool, I’ll just roll back to Seoul as fast as I can,’ since my wife had just flown into Seoul.”
Crew members soon realized they had made a mistake as Steven was supposed to be on set, but they allowed him to continue with his journey to reunite with Joana.
“I saw her there that day and when you see your wife for the first time in a long time, you do it (have sex)! My kid was conceived, and that wasn’t even planned!”
Returning to his family’s homeland for Okja also gave Steven the opportunity to visit his ailing grandmother before she died.
“I saw my grandma for the last time there,” he said. “She recently passed and I saw her basically on her way out.”
Steven and Joana welcomed their son, whose name has not been released, in March, three months after marrying in Los Angeles in December 2016.
