The Great Wall’s Pedro Pascal doesn’t want people to miss his new film because of the whitewashing backlash it’s received.

Soon after it was announced that Matt Damon was to star in Chinese director Zhang Yimou’s first English-language film, there was an outcry from critics.

Zhang has been forced to defend his casting decision, recently explaining to SFX magazine that the story is simply about foreign mercenaries.

Now that the film has hit cinemas, Pedro is adamant people should see it.

“Miss this and you’d be denying yourself exposure to Chinese masters of the form,” he sighed to America’s Esquire. “I think it’s important that people see it and experience what isn’t familiar to them in the Western world.”

The Great Wall, which began hitting theaters late last year, marks Pedro’s transition from TV actor to film star. Audiences will recognize the Chilean-born American thespian from hit Netflix show Narcos, about Pablo Escobar’s rise to the top of the drugs world and subsequent fall from grace.

He’s also had recurring roles in The Mentalist and Game of Thrones, though admits fans don’t quite know his real name yet.

“On the street, I get either ‘Are you the Red Viper?’ (Game of Thrones) or ‘Are you Javier Pena?’ (Narcos) If anyone knows my name, they probably Googled me first,” he smiled.

After The Great Wall, Pedro will make his next cinema outing opposite Taron Egerton and Mark Strong in the second Kingsman movie, The Golden Circle, which also stars Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum and Halle Berry.

Narcos will also be back for a third season later his year.

“I have no idea what I’m allowed to say about the next season,” Pedro teased. “But then, you can look it up. All the major events, you can find them online.”
