News of Leonard Cohen’s imminent death is premature, according to the singer-songwriter, who recently told New Yorker magazine he was “ready to die”.

The Everybody Knows singer hosted a listening session for his new album in Los Angeles on Thursday night and addressed reports he was dying following remarks he made in a New Yorker interview.

The 82-year-old told the publication, “I don’t think I’ll be able to finish those songs (I’m working on). Maybe, who knows? And maybe I’ll get a second wind, I don’t know. But I don’t dare attach myself to a spiritual strategy. I don’t dare do that.

“I’ve got some work to do. Take care of business. I am ready to die. I hope it’s not too uncomfortable. That’s about it for me.”

But on Thursday night an upbeat Cohen told fans he was simply trying to make a philosophical statement that was lost in translation.

“I said I was ready to die recently and I think I was exaggerating,” he said. “I’ve always been into self-dramatization. I intend to live forever.”

In fact, he’s hoping to follow his upcoming release, You Want It Darker, with two new albums he has already started work on.

But the singer did confess to a recent bout of ill health, adding, “My son and my daughter have both been an incredibly sustaining force, especially thorough this recent bad patch. So I’ve been blessed and grateful for their company.”
